Dublin, 3rd June 2019 Ireland’s largest home grown online travel agent, Click&Go, and the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) are calling for urgent Government action to tackle rising insurance costs which pose a serious threat to travel agents across Ireland.

Following an impressive level of growth since it’s founding in 2010, Irish-owned online travel agent, Click&Go, now employ over 50 people and have opened their first office outside of Ireland. However, the company has been hit with severe insurance hikes and have seen their insurance premium increase eight fold since 2017.

Paul Hackett, co-founder and CEO of Click&Go said, “Our insurance premium has gone from €49.5k in 2017, to €200k in 2018, to €400k in 2019. These increased insurance costs are crippling Irish businesses and resulting in business closures and job losses. We, like many other businesses, are extremely disappointed by the inaction of the current government on the rising costs of insurance in this country.”

Pat Dawson, CEO of the ITAA, said, “The claims culture in Ireland is causing a major impact for the travel industry and our members are reporting policy renewals in excess of seven and eight times their last premium – even without claims against the business. Like any other industry, the current free-for-all attitude towards insurance claims is a serious threat to travel agents.”

Dawson continued, “The ITAA has discussed these issues with insurers, but at present there is just one company willing to provide travel businesses with policies, causing a monopoly and allowing the insurer to charge whatever they like.”

“The legal profession must take responsibility for the astronomical costs incurred by Irish businesses. The threat to businesses is reaching breaking point; some members’ insurance policies have increased from €3,000 to €30,000 and €50,000 to €200,000. This is completely unsustainable and businesses are faced with utter uncertainty of the cost of their next policy.”

Dawson concluded, “The ITAA and Click&Go are urging the government to review the Book of Quantum which is four to five times higher than in the UK. The government have been warned of the insurance crisis for many years and we hope that now the issue in is their own back garden, they will do something about it.”
