Dublin, 30th September 2016  The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) has welcomed the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office which show that over 5 million overseas trips were made by Irish residents from January to August 2016. This is an increase of 4.9%, when compared with the same period in 2015, and the first time in many years that this figure has reached the 5 million mark.

The CSO Overseas Travel statistics show a steady growth in overseas travel by Irish residents over the past number of years. Since 2014 the total number of Irish residents travelling overseas in the first eight months of the year (January to August) has increased by almost half a million. The total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents during the period June – August 2016 increased by 1.8% to 2,357,600, when compared with the same period twelve months earlier.

Cormac Meehan, President of the ITAA, commented “Yesterday’s CSO statistics for Overseas Travel showed an extraordinary growth in the number of Irish travelling abroad. The last time we achieved such figures for overseas trips was in 2008. This is very positive news for the Irish travel industry and ITAA members who endeavour to offer quality and affordable deals to Irish holidaymakers through the ITAA website and their own platforms. ”

A recent ITAA members quarterly survey (July 2016) revealed that Spain was the most popular destination for Irish holidaymakers travelling overseas this summer, followed by Portugal and the USA.  Meehan concluded, “For 2016, Spain has represented a safe and secure destination following months of unrest throughout Europe and beyond. It is fantastic to see travel agents, tour operators and suppliers working together to overcome the many challenges within the sector and ensure the growth of the Irish travel industry.”

The ITAA represents Ireland’s travel Industry, bringing together 100 travel agent members and 70 affiliate partners. ITAA members cover over 140 outlets in different towns and cities throughout the Republic of Ireland. All travel agent members are licensed by the Commission for Aviation Regulation and are fully bonded providing full financial protection for their customers.
