Minister Flanagan launches TravelWise – a new smartphone travel app
– All fans heading to Euro 2016 in France can download the App
– Anyone needing consular assistance abroad will have instant smartphone access to the Department’s global network of 80 Embassies and Consulates
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Charlie Flanagan TD, this morning launched TravelWise, a new free smartphone travel app available for download on iOS and Android. (click red text for links).
Speaking at the launch, Minister Flanagan said:
“I am delighted to launch TravelWise, my Department’s new free smartphone app. TravelWise will help Irish people travelling abroad to stay safe and informed while travelling, living or working overseas.
“I would urge all Irish people travelling abroad to download and use the App. The app has user-friendly travel advice and consular information for 200 countries worldwide.
“All fans heading to Euro 2016 in France can download the App and “favourite” France, to get France-related security updates from my Department direct to their phone. Mothers and fathers back in Ireland can do the same.”
For the increasing number of Irish residents travelling abroad – over 7 million trips this year – and especially those going to higher risk destinations, the App introduces an easy to use four-tier security rating system for each country.
The Minister explained:
“Users should set customised alerts to receive my Department’s latest security updates for where they are going.
“Anyone needing consular assistance abroad will have instant smartphone access to the Department’s global network of 80 Embassies and Consulates, and our 90-plus Honorary Consulates.
“And all these key emergency contacts, along with the entire App content, will remain available offline, and in your pocket, so no roaming charges need apply.”
The Minister noted that:
“This new smartphone app underlines the Government’s commitment to the expanded provision of public services online. This is an Irish-led and Irish-designed project that combines cutting edge technology and security features with ground-breaking levels of user-friendliness and flexibility.”
