Surfing USA! American destinations riding high in the list of summer hotspots

ITAA reveal hotspots and trends for Summer 2016 at the Irish Travel Trade Show

Dublin, 7th April 2015   Spain, Portugal and the USA are the most popular holiday destinations for Irish holiday makers to visit in summer 2016 according to the latest Irish Travel Agents Association quarterly survey. The results of the survey were announced at the second annual Irish Travel Industry Trade Show, which took place in the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin 4, today.

The US also topped the poll of the top city break destinations with New York being the most popular city break of the year so far, followed by Barcelona, Rome and Prague. The resurgence of US destinations at the top of the poll has been greatly assisted by the host of new routes to the US launched by airlines this summer. At today’s trade show Aer Lingus celebrated the launch of their new routes to LA, Hartford and Newark with an American style BBQ.

When asked about the biggest travel trends in 2016 so far, agents were in agreement that all inclusive cruises have seen a huge surge in popularity. Camping in Europe is also becoming increasingly popular among families this year. The survey showed that there has been a decline in travel to North Africa, Turkey and Greece. For some agents, city breaks to Brussels, Paris and London have also been affected.

At the Travel Industry Trade Show, however, the mood was jubilant as 60% of Irish travel agents have seen an increase in bookings in the first quarter of 2016 (Jan-Mar) compared to the same period in 2015. A large attendance of travel professionals turned out at this one-day travel extravaganza to network with their fellow professionals and discover the latest in travel innovation, product demonstrations and new customer experiences from a range of international exhibitors.

Speaking at the show, Cormac Meehan, the newly elected President of the ITAA,  said, “It is fantastic to see travel agents, tour operators and suppliers working together to ensure the growth and development of the Irish travel industry. We are delighted to see that the industry is picking up again following the downturn and the huge turnout today is proof of the enthusiasm and passion that travel agents have for the sector.”
