Dublin Airport spends €15m on T1 upgrade

Dublin Airport has invested €15m in modernising the departures floor and the security screening area in Terminal 1.

A large chunk of the investment has been spent on the delivery of 15 new automatic tray return systems (ATRS) in the passenger security screening area.

Dublin Airport managing director Vincent Harrison, said Terminal 1 has had over 400 million passengers since its inception 44 years ago and is now being renovated on a phased basis.

The new ATRS are six metres longer than previous machines with the aim to provide more preparation space for passengers.

Dublin Airport said early trials of the new system have sped up the processing time.

“We understand the security screening process can be a stressful element of the departing journey and we are constantly looking at ways to improve that area in particular,” Mr Harrison said.

Other improvements to the departures floor have seen the removal of airline ticket desks from window areas, allowing more natural light to enter.

Dublin Airport had its busiest year ever last year with a record 25 million passengers.
